A new Plastic Packaging Tax will take effect from 1 April 2022 and will encourage the use of recycled plastic within plastic packaging. The tax will apply to plastic packaging manufactured in, or imported into, the UK where the plastic used in its manufacture is less than 30% recycled.
Crucially the payment of the tax and the paperwork will be the responsibility of the importer or the UK manufacturer. What it will mean for our end users is that the cost of ‘virgin’ plastic will go up. The Government hopes it will encourage customers to buy plastic with a percentage of recycled content in it; thus encouraging better collection of plastic waste and more recycling.
We will help our customers make this switch and will recommend you advertise that you are using this plastic for your bags. The material will not feel quite as shiny and perfect as the ‘virgin’ plastic but we think over time it will become the ‘norm’ and everyone will accept this is a step we all have to take and a compromise we all have to make.
